As I wrote in my last post, the Texans made the decision to start a brand new era altogether for their team with QB Davis Mills being their first draft selection. Although the Texans got around to making some defensive picks, its clear with their first pick of day three in the 5th round, TE Brevin Jordan of Miami that their priority is to build a team for Davis. The final selections of the Texans second day of actually drafting picks included LB Garret Wallow of TCU also in the 5th round and DT Roy Lopez of Arizona in the 6th round. No picks were made during the 7th round.
Some outside commentators are seem very baffled at Houston's picks overall. Here is an analysis from The Athletic. I think its more through than ESPN's coverage in that its more thoughtful. But they don't seem to understand at all the mindset and purpose of general manager Nick Caserio. If you read The Athletic's coverage of the Texans you will notice some confusion at the fact at the aggressive actions they made to get Nico Collins.
While I believe the Texans think the defense is a priority also (as do I), I believe their picks on defense were more political as opposed to filling a specific need. You have a defensive coordinator as I pointed out in my prior posts, Lovie Smith, that's the most experienced and successful coach on the entire staff. Head coach David Culley has never an offensive coordinator on the professional level and yet Lovie Smith has coached in a Super Bowl during the 2006 postseason. If dynamics were different, I believe Caserio would have spent every pick of this draft going of the offensive side of the ball. Caserio would have chosen offensive linemen to better protect Mills.
Nevertheless, I believe Houston will continue to see if they can make deals in free agency to get defensive talent. He pointed out in his press conference today about the need for competition in his opening remarks below. GM Caserio will make it a priority next year to draft lineman perhaps opposed to skill players on both sides of the football. There will be more defensive picks for Houston in next year's draft regardless. Had things been different without the Watson fiasco, I believe getting linemen would have already been a priority during this years draft. But the Watson circus did happen and GM Caserio felt forced to wholly build a team from scratch.
There's of course a variety of both national and local sources covering the Texans role in the draft. I could write post after post of what fans think which I will eventually get around to. There will be also of course significant post-draft analysis throughout next week on the morning sports shows. But one thing is clear in the aftermath of the 2021 NFL Draft, Houston's definitely out with the old.
